What is religion?

The modern world might claim to be non-religious, but it is extremely religious in a very bad way

What is "religion"?

Is it possible to be non-religious?

The modern age decided that many people were just "not religious"... and so the modern system lumped everybody who was overtly worshipping a named god or idol into a big basket called "religious people" or even the vacuous label "theists".

The governing idea then, for 200 years, has been that the default setting for modern, western people is "not religious", but some people "find religion" - and get into this optional appendix, personal preference, mere opinion, blind faith that is "religion".

However, the Bible says that greed is idolatry.

Colossians 3:5.

The ancient prophet Hosea speaks as if living for food and wine is the worship of false gods.

He even says that the pursuit of money is idolatry that brings destruction - "By making idols for themselves from their silver and gold, they have brought about their own destruction." Hosea 8:4.

So however secular the pursuit of our desires might look, it is a religious devotion to idolatry.

From the perspective of the highest heaven, the modern western age is one of the most intensely religious of all human history - a time of fundamentalist fanaticism to idolatry.

We live at a time when our whole culture is filled with priests and preachers of idolatry.

Day and night we are constantly urged to renew our worship,

to make further sacrifices,

to stir up our love for the idols of pleasure and treasure.
